What To Avoid For The First 24 To 48 Hours After A Brazilian Wax
Waxing pulls hair out at the root, which leaves every follicle in the area open for a day or two. That one fact explains this entire list. Everything below is just something that takes advantage of an open follicle.
Two days. That is all this is. After that you can go back to your life.
Skip the heat
No hot showers, no baths, no saunas, no steam rooms, no hot tubs. Heat opens everything up further and irritates skin that is already having a moment. Lukewarm water only, and keep it brief.
Skip the sweat
No gym, no hot yoga, no long walks in Tampa in August. Sweat is salty and it sits in open follicles, which is a reliable way to end up with the exact bumps you were hoping to avoid. If you have to move, keep it light and shower straight after with cool water.
Skip the sun and the tanning bed
Freshly waxed skin burns faster and pigments unevenly, which is how a wax turns into dark patches that outlast the smoothness by months. Forty-eight hours minimum, and sunscreen after that if the area is going to see daylight at all.
Skip the pool and the beach
Open follicles and shared water do not mix, and that includes hot tubs, lakes and the Gulf. Give it two days. Book accordingly if you are waxing before a trip — this is the single most common scheduling mistake people make.
Skip exfoliating — yes, even though exfoliating is the whole strategy
This is the one people get wrong in the other direction. Exfoliation is genuinely how you prevent ingrown hairs, so the instinct is to start immediately. Do not. Scrubbing freshly waxed skin is just irritation on top of irritation.
Wait three to four days, then start, then keep going two to three times a week. Timing is doing most of the work here, not the product.
Skip the friction
Tight leggings, rough seams, shapewear, anything that rubs. Loose cotton for two days. Sex counts as friction too, and I would rather say that plainly than have you find out the uncomfortable way.
What to actually do instead
Loose clothes. A cool shower if you need one. A calming oil if the area feels tight — Pretty Kitty Oil ($22) or the Bushbalm Ingrown Oil ($26) both work for this. Then leave it alone. Skin is good at settling down when nothing is happening to it.
If you are prone to bumps, the High Frequency add-on ($20, ten minutes) can be booked onto your wax. It calms inflammation and reduces bacteria right after the appointment, which shortens the window where things can go wrong.
If you get a few small bumps anyway
A scattering of small red bumps in the first day or two is normal and usually settles on its own. Do not pick at them, do not scrub them, and do not put anything harsh on them.
If they are still there after a few days, getting bigger, hot, painful, or filling with fluid, that is worth having someone look at properly. Text me a description and I will tell you honestly whether it is something I can help with at your next appointment or whether you should see a doctor.
The Tampa part
Our humidity makes all of this harder than it would be somewhere dry. You sweat walking to the car. Plan your appointment for a day when you can be reasonably still afterwards, and try not to book a wax the morning of a beach day — the two days of quiet are what make the wax look good for the next three weeks.
